“I didn’t know until I was late thirties that other people thought in words,” she explains. Today Grandin is a professor of animal science at Colorado State University, a tireless promoter of animal welfare and the author or co-author of more than a dozen books that include the best-sellers “Thinking in Pictures” (which became an HBO movie starring Claire Danes) and “Animals in Translation.” Instead, she was tested for deafness and epilepsy. “The doctor who diagnosed me in 1949 did not know what autism was,” she says.
